(1782-1861) Saint Eugene was a bishop and the founder of the Oblates of Mary Immaculate. His childhood was filled with family fighting and eventually his parents’ divorce, which was very unusual for the early 19th century. Eugene did a lot to rebuild the Church in France after the French Revolution. His order, the Oblates, continues to be a missionary powerhouse. He is a patron saint of dysfunctional families.
We can develop unhealthy ways of managing the trauma or chaos created by someone indulging in addictions, compulsions, or unhealthy attachments. Remember, you are not the most powerful force in your family’s and friends’ lives—you did not cause their issues, and you cannot force others to change. We can turn it over to the care of God (Step 3). Seek the intercession and assistance of the angels (especially guardian angels) and the saints.
“There is an immortal soul within you made to the image of God, a soul redeemed at the price of the very blood of Jesus, more precious in the eyes of God than all the riches and all the kingdoms of this earth. Know your dignity – you even share the Divine Nature – Children of God, Children of the Most High!” (Saint Eugene de Mazenod, OMI)
