Jesus Himself tells us in today’s Gospel reading of one simple but life-altering fact, that if we have “ears to hear” His incredible news we would rejoice with love: “God so loved the world that he gave his only-begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him might have eternal life” (John 3:16).
The beauty of our Catholic Church’s sacraments and teachings is that they offer us a framework for our faith—a structure for “working out” our belief in Christ. We might see this structure as the “bones” of the body of Christ. Yet, it is our love and faith that cause our hearts to beat and bring life to Christ’s body. Similarly, the Twelve Steps offers us a framework and structure for living out our recovery, though, without putting our faith and love “in action” our recovery will remain lifeless.
“Keeping it simple” teaches us to prioritize God’s love for us and to trust in Him. Our actions flow from internalizing this simple fact: Jesus loves us. Responding to His love means accepting that we are never alone regardless of our failures. The structures of our faith and recovery encourage an encounter with Jesus as He breathes life into our “broken-ness.”
