“He said, ‘To what shall we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable can we use for it? It is like a mustard seed that, when it is sown in the ground, is the smallest of all the seeds on the earth. But once it is sown, it springs up and becomes the largest of plants and puts forth large branches, so that the birds of the sky can dwell in its shade’” (Mark 4:30-32).
Previously, the seeds of faith God had planted in our souls had been dormant, withered in a state of sin and addiction. We had abandoned the gardener who tends to our hearts. It’s only when we surrender our will and life over to God and enter a 12-step fellowship like AA or CIR that we become a living kingdom of God to others. We become nourished through our faith, meetings, and a sponsor who takes us through the Twelve Steps. Over time these once-withered seeds in our souls are nourished by God’s grace, they are watered and fertilized by the sacraments. At last, by living in the sunlight of the Spirit, these seeds flower within us, helping us grow in courage, acceptance, and wisdom. Our recovered lives become the large shady branches where others seeking relief from addictions, compulsions, and unhealthy attachments can find rest. Our continued recovery blossoms and bears lasting good fruit and abundant life.
