Feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord

What are we to make of this stunning scene? Jesus intentionally led His closest friends on a challenging journey “apart by themselves” for a specific purpose. This revelation was not for the crowds but for His trusted apostles. In recovery, the importance of having trusted relationships cannot be overstated. We can fall into various traps, such as fearfully hiding in the background or oversharing our story in an attempt to be known or accepted by others. Before Jesus revealed His divinity, a trusting relationship was built with a chosen few whom He instructed and who demonstrated sufficient maturity. This foundation of close relationships allowed them to witness this sacred event and hear the voice of God the Father identify Jesus as the beloved Son.

Many of us come to the rooms of recovery with insecure and immature coping skills; we are children, after all, as our Lord calls us. However, we are not alone in this journey to become spiritually mature. By encountering the sacraments, Scripture, and the Twelve Steps as well as meeting with fellows in recovery, we can develop trusting, authentic relationships with God and others. This process takes time. In fact, according to a common recovery phrase, “it takes as much time as it takes.” We eventually learn to discern proper, healthy boundaries with each person God brings into our lives. This process of healing and transformation, with the support of God and others, helps us grow mature relationships on a secure foundation of balanced honesty, openness, and willingness. In turn, we become equipped to lead others and bear witness to the “dazzling white” glory of the Lord in both our lives and theirs.

Reflection Questions

  • In your recovery journey, have you found yourself more likely to fearfully hide from others or overshare? What recovery tools can you use to overcome this fear of becoming vulnerable with others or exercise more self-control to combat people-pleasing insecurity?
  • Do you have trusted, safe relationships with others who are in recovery? How do you discern healthy friendships with others accompanying you on your faith journey?
