Saturday of the Third Week of Advent

In recovery, we have likely experienced the need for “haste-ful” help. Perhaps we cried out for it or someone reached out to us having noticed our wretched condition. In whatever form it took, another person in recovery eventually ignited hope in our lives and we leaped for joy as John the Baptist did in his mother’s womb! The good news of God’s unfathomable love and mercy, and the witness of others who have allowed themselves to receive resurrection through Him, could not be contained. We felt compelled to share it by helping others. We entered the loop of God’s grace, embracing the truth that the only way to remain in His love is by giving it away.

By going to Elizabeth’s aid, Mary—carrying Jesus in her womb—became the first missionary, the first bearer of the Good News that would change human history. Mary was able to bring incredible joy to both Elizabeth and John the Baptist precisely because she was bringing Christ. To bring hope and joy to others both within and beyond our recovery circles, we must bring them Christ. He is the greatest gift we could ever bring to someone. Bring Christ and we bring everything. So many people desperately need us to bring Him, especially those struggling with addictions, compulsions, and unhealthy attachments who hunger for His healing love and presence (perhaps without even knowing it). Today let’s heed our Blessed Mother’s example to be missionaries by bringing Christ to those in our midst.
