Feast of Saint Andrew, Apostle

That is what these four apostles did—they turned their will and lives over to God. He called them by name and they responded decisively. Jesus calls each of us personally and, thankfully and incredibly, never gives up. My name was called by sugar, shopping, excessive exercise, starvation, and approval. I answered these calls repeatedly, believing they were authentic and would lead to happiness. How many times would it take for me to realize I was using them as cheap substitutes for God? How long would it take to realize they were destroying my life, physically, emotionally, and spiritually? By the grace of God, I found Catholic in Recovery. I may not have been fully willing at first but I met others who were and I wanted the undeniable freedom they had.

Praise be to Jesus Christ that people in recovery programs generously share their strength, hope, openness, and willingness with others. In other words, that they continually work Step 12: “Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these Steps, we tried to carry this message to others, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.” Jesus wants each of us to follow Him, not just as companions but as sharers in His mission—as “fishers of men.” When we surrender to God’s will, each of us can be a fisher regardless of where we are on our journey. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, may each of us be a witness and a communicator of the Good News of God.
