Water is life. We can live up to three weeks without food but only three days without water. No wonder water is such an important and prevalent biblical image! From the creation story in Genesis, the parting of the Red Sea, Moses calling water forth from the rock, and water flowing from the side of Christ at His crucifixion, we see that water brings new life and transformation again and again. Even the water in the form of tears can be transforming. In the hymn, “Eternal Maker of All Things,” we sing of our tears washing away our sins. For those of us traveling on the road of recovery, we have likely shed tears in abundance—both our own tears as well as those who have journeyed with us. Yet, through our tears, we have also found hope and freedom.
Therefore, let us reflect on the waters of our baptism when we became members of the Church, and seek always to remain submerged in the healing waters of Christ’s love as we continue on the path of recovery.
