The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed (All Souls)

Audio Reflection

The prophet Isaiah offers comfort that God’s love triumphs over death:

“He will destroy death forever. The Lord God will wipe away the tears from all faces; the reproach of his people he will remove from the whole earth; for the Lord has spoken. It will be said on that day: Behold our God, to whom we looked to save us! This is the Lord for whom we looked; let us rejoice and be glad that he has saved us!” (Isaiah 25:8-9)

Through the Steps, we have learned that surrender brings life. Step Three calls us to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God, while All Souls Day invites us to trust that this surrender extends beyond the grave. Just as God’s mercy has healed us here and now, we trust that His compassion reaches into every soul still being purified by His love.

Jesus reaffirms this promise of eternal life:

“And this is the will of the one who sent me, that I should not lose anything of what he gave me, but that I should raise it on the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in him may have eternal life, and I shall raise him on the last day” (John 6:39-40).

When we pray for the departed, we also remember the daily “deaths” in our own journey—the letting go of old idols, ideas, resentments, and self-will. In surrendering these attachments, we experience the same grace that raises the dead to life. Gratitude becomes our response to both loss and renewal.

All Souls Day teaches us that love outlasts everything. Death does not sever the bonds formed in Christ. As we remember those who have gone before us, we are strengthened in faith, reminded that our healing story is part of a much larger communion of saints and souls being made whole in God’s love.
