Of course, I am still working on becoming a saint with the aid of recovery and the sacraments—one day at a time. We are continuously called to surrender our addictions, compulsions, and unhealthy attachments to God on our journey of becoming saints like Saint Augustine. And I can’t think of a better way to become a saint than through the process and power of the Twelve Steps and the Church’s sacraments. This is what we practice in Catholic in Recovery. While Saint Augustine had his mother and mentor in his spiritual corner, we in Catholic in Recovery have our prayerful recovery fellows who can help us become the saints we’re called to be.
Reflection Question
- How do you relate to Saint Augustine’s conversion from a heathen attached to a hedonistic lifestyle to a faithful Catholic and saint? What can you do today to take a step closer to sainthood?
- Who are the people in your life praying for your recovery and spiritual life? Who can you pray for today?
