Saturday of the Nineteenth Week in Ordinary Time

Audio Reflection

The Twelve Steps give us clear directions, especially the first three steps. Step One asks us to admit our powerlessness—admit that we are helpless. Step Two invites us to become aware of a loving father who wants to care for us. Step Three invites us to ask God to accept us as His children and restore our lives. In other words, the steps invite us to “See what love the Father has given us, that we should be called children of God, and so we are” (1 John 3:1). Becoming like a child before God requires us to ask for a change of heart. When we ask God to be His children, He will teach us to accept pain, sickness, suffering, and even death in this world, and we will eventually see His providential hand working to recover us from our addictions and unhealthy attachments.

“Truly I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it” (Luke 18:17). How much clearer can Jesus be? He is asking us to spiritually become like children, and this is the secret to sainthood. Let us remain His spiritual children today and beyond as we continue on our recovery and faith journey.

Reflection Questions

  • Reflect on the first three steps. How can you apply the spiritual lessons of these steps to your day today?
  • Do you feel like a son or daughter of God? Ask the Lord today in prayer to help you become and remain His spiritual child.
