In today’s Responsorial Psalm, we read, “Into your hands, O Lord, I commend my spirit; Be my rock of refuge, a stronghold to give me safety. You are my rock and my fortress; for your name’s sake, you will lead and guide me.”
When we give our whole being and soul back to God we recover the keys to the kingdom. We commence to live in truth, and with this truth we cast away the strongholds of the enemy that were holding us captive. We have faith that God will guide our lives toward sobriety and freedom from our addictions.
In today’s Gospel reading, we read, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me will never hunger, and whoever believes in me will never thirst” (John 6:35).
I find it really ironic that beer is often advertised as thirst-quenching. Yet, just like every lie from the enemy, an alcoholic drink will only make us thirstier and wanting more. This is the case with any other form of addiction or unhealthy attachments—they ultimately leave us feeling empty. But the Bread of Life—the Eucharist—will satisfy our hungry hearts. We have been created in the image and likeness of God, and He has given us perfect love and mercy. Let us rejoice in Him, knowing that He will become our cornerstone in sobriety and truly satisfy our yearning as we surrender to His will.
