Solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the Mother of God The Octave Day of Christmas

In today’s Gospel reading, Mary models a great spiritual practice for us. In response to the shepherds telling her their message about the child, Jesus, Mary “kept all these things, reflecting on them in her heart” (Luke 2:19). What great words to remind us of the importance of reflecting on the message of God given to us every day through Scripture.

In our recovery journey, we should reflect also upon Our Lord’s birth as we do on His Passion, keeping close to our hearts these twin reflections and the truths they reveal to us. Jesus Christ was born into this world and died to save us from sin by sacrificing Himself out of love for us. And unlike what Tom Hanks’ character says at the conclusion of Saving Private Ryan, we do not need to “earn” this freedom and salvation. It has been ransomed by our loving God because of His generous love. All we need to do is accept this wonderful blessing by invoking His name and embracing the love poured out on the cross for us each day.

Reflection Questions

  • When was the last time you felt blessed and loved by the Lord? Reflect on these times in your heart.
  • How have you asked Mary to show you the way to Jesus in your spiritual life? How can you ask her today?
