Mary’s humility is evident in today’s Gospel reading, as she travels to visit and minister to her cousin, Elizabeth. Having learned of her own momentous destiny, Mary immediately focuses her thoughts on her cousin and departs to assist Elizabeth in her moment of need. Providing company, practical support, and emotional and spiritual ministry, the Blessed Mother exemplifies the humility of service we are each called to offer one another in recovery. As she was to Elizabeth, so too are we to be for one another. Despite a lengthy and dangerous journey ahead, Mary immediately sets out with her cousin’s needs in mind, trusting that God will provide protection and strength. Mary’s instincts are perfectly aligned with God’s will, and she responds with love and a spirit of sacrifice that is both a source of aid for us and a model for us to follow.
How blessed we are to have a mother who personifies humility and comes to our aid when we are most in need of solace and support! Fortified by her nurturing heart, we can accept her help and be replenished and rejuvenated in order to provide service and ministry to others. Mary serves God’s purpose of manifesting the fruits of her spouse, the Holy Spirit. Her ministry to us—if accepted—will always result in our turning toward our brothers and sisters (both in and out of recovery) in a spirit of service. Let us respond with the humility she has made manifest and perpetuate the fruits and graces she has merited. Our recovery and that of our fellows await!
