Saturday of the Thirty-fourth Week in Ordinary Time

I came close to relapse when I was 15 years sober. I was sitting in the parking lot of a Seven-Eleven after an argument with my wife and contemplating buying alcohol, as if that would solve my problems. God’s grace saved me that day! I didn’t buy the alcohol, and I realized, looking back, that I had become complacent in my recovery. I wasn’t frequenting meetings. I wasn’t working with a sponsor, mentor, or spiritual director. I wasn’t sponsoring anyone or connecting with others in recovery. The only thing I had going for me was that I was still praying every day and going to Mass every week.

After that close call, I realized how important it is to stay vigilant and continue practicing recovery—one day at a time—by going to meetings, working with a sponsor, mentor, coach, or spiritual director, and regularly connecting with others in recovery, including newcomers. These habits keep me in the Twelve Steps of recovery, which are the backbone of Catholic in Recovery along with the sacraments of our faith. I thank God today and every day for my recovery. May we never become complacent and rest on our laurels when it comes to our recovery.
