Wednesday of the Thirty-First Week in Ordinary Time

In recovery, this challenge becomes real to us as we learn that we need to make our recovery and our relationship with God our highest priority. Anything we put before our recovery and our relationship with God will almost certainly be lost. To quote Zig Ziglar, “We need to keep the main thing the main thing.” Of course, this doesn’t mean we put CIR, AA, or other recovery activities and service commitments before our relationship with our spouse or family, for instance. Doing so can be a form of avoidance from the many ways we are called to still serve and love in our lives if we are not careful. However, we must always keep our relationship with God and with that of our recovery (not necessarily our specific recovery activities) first and foremost in our lives. And we do this by praying continually for God’s guidance to maintain our energies and focus as He would have us.

Reflection Questions

  • Are you “keeping the main thing the main thing?” Is your relationship with God and your recovery the highest priority in your life?
  • Are you allowing recovery activities to become a distraction from other priorities you should be addressing?
