Wednesday of the Nineteenth Week in Ordinary Time

In the recovery process, there is a similar approach used in helping those suffering from addiction to find recovery through the invitation of others into the recovery community. This is known as the “Twelfth Step Call,” where we invite a newcomer into recovery by sharing about how we recovered, giving the newcomer a reason for hope. Step 12 reads, “Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to alcoholics and to practice these principles in all our affairs.” This is the step where we give back through service to other addicts as sponsors, CIR meeting leaders, and so on. The goal of the “Twelfth Step Call” is to encourage others to commit to their first step of recovery.

We can help others make this step by being truly present to them and sharing our experience, strength, and hope. Sometimes these calls fail to bring the addict into recovery. Yet, if they refuse to heed our invitation, we can still place them in the hands of God, praying that they will not be forgotten and will soon find the road to recovery.

Reflection Questions

  • What has it meant for you to have a spiritual awakening? Have you tried to share this with others by inviting them to begin recovery?
  • What does practicing recovery principles in all our affairs mean to you in terms of your recovery?
