Tuesday of the Eleventh Week in Ordinary Time

In today’s Gospel reading, Jesus takes it a step further, telling us to not only serve others but to extend love to the “bad guys!” He tells us, “love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you….For if you love (only) those who love you, what recompense will you have?” (Matthew 5:44-46). We are called to a higher standard, to a life of holiness and self-sacrificial love that participates in union with the Trinity.

It is not by accident that the early 12-steppers realized that service should play a vital part in one’s recovery. We can no longer settle for being “minimalists,” or doing “just enough” to get by. Instead, we are to respond with magnanimity. The grace that comes from “getting out of ourselves” and caring for others helps us recognize our true dignity as beloved sons and daughters of God.

Reflection Questions

  • Consider a time when someone’s Christian behavior served to strengthen your own faith. How can you set about strengthening another’s faith through your Christian actions today?
  • Is there an “enemy” weighing on your heart? Whether it’s through prayer or an act of service, how might the Lord be inviting you to love this person?
