In our daily, weekly, or even monthly schedule, can we commit a dedicated amount of time to spiritual growth that will directly benefit others in our faith and recovery communities? What gifts and talents can we share to bring God’s love to others? How might we joyfully share financially with those in need? In other words, how can we better model the characteristic virtues of humility and gaiety that Saint Philip Neri did so well during his life? This saint, whose memorial we celebrate today, had an approach to sanctity that was truly “catholic” and all-embracing, while often accompanied by a good laugh.
All of us have been called by Jesus to feed His sheep, especially those lost in addiction and seeking the path of recovery. We can show those seeking freedom from addiction how it is possible to become not less but more human by striving for holiness. Those of us who have been in recovery for some time can reach out and help those just beginning their journey, sharing with them our experience, strength, and hope. Finally, through the Holy Spirit and in a similar way to Saint Philip Neri, we can help blaze a new path away from the temptations and sins of our world and change it for good, one soul at a time.
Reflection Questions
- How are you responding to our Lord’s request to “feed his sheep” with respect to your time, talent, and treasure?
- How can you radiate a natural warmth, cordiality, and love for God to others as Saint Philip Neri did?
